Cargotec subsidiary Cargotec Port Security, LLC, has won its first commercial contract – an order from Lockheed Martin for a Cargotec Port Security (CPS) spreader-mounted radiation detection system. Lockheed Martin will use the CPS system to complete integration testing of the global security company’s Container Scanning System.
The CPS equipment purchased by Lockheed Martin will feature the container handling industry’s most versatile ship-to-shore crane spreader -- the Bromma STS45 separating twin-lift 20’- 45’ telescoping unit -- outfitted with Cargotec Port Security RTIS (Radiation Threat Identification System) technology.
Supplied by the Durham, NC Bromma operation, the Bromma STS45 crane spreader is the company’s most popular ship-to-shore spreader model. Due to its high-productivity design, the spreader is frequently used at the highest-throughput terminal operations in the world.
Cargotec Port Security RTIS technology is supplied by strategic partner Innovative American Technology and can be installed on crane spreaders, straddle carriers or other mobile equipment, such as on marine vessels engaged in security operations. Using proprietary software, RTIS technology identifies a particular isotope source through analysis of the radiation and distinguishes it from naturally occurring radiological material. It has been specifically designed to operate effectively in harsh marine environments.
The spreader-mounted system purchased by Lockheed Martin uses CPS technology to scan containers for gamma, neutron and x-ray radiation while the spreader is in transit.
Advanced Lockheed Martin Container Scanning System Product Development
Lockheed Martin will use the CPS spreader-mounted scanning system as part of its integrated technology solutions portfolio for enhanced United States homeland, maritime and border security. Lockheed Martin’s container security solutions portfolio includes advanced, integrated container tracking and optical character recognition technology. Lockheed Martin and Cargotec Port Security plan to install and test the spreader-mounted radiation detection system at a United States port during 2009.
Spreader-mounted gamma and neutron sensitivity scanning during the movement of the container in the normal ship-to-shore load/unload process is designed to meet the U.S. government’s requirement for 100 percent inbound container scanning by 2012. At the same time, the CPS system will not compromise overall terminal productivity. Earlier field evaluations of CPS technology were conducted at Port Charleston and Port Tacoma between April and September 2008. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Service, the U.S. Department of Energy Megaport program and scientists from Pacific Northwest Labs conducted the field evaluations, which detected and identified radiological materials at all points tested across the container.
The field evaluations at Port Charleston and Port Tacoma followed an audited analysis of the Cargotec Port Security solution conducted at the U.S. Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Cargotec Port Security also recently concluded advanced container scanning trials at the United States Department of Energy Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM. The Los Alamos facility is one of two United States laboratories where national security nuclear-related testing is conducted.
Technology Purchased By Lockheed Martin Has Been Awarded Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) Designation
The Cargotec Port Security system purchased by Lockheed Martin has already been awarded Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) Designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Receipt of QATT Designation followed the successful Department of Energy Oak Ridge evaluation, in which the Cargotec Port Security spreader solution demonstrated 100 percent accuracy, with zero false positives and zero false negatives.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 146,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.
Cargotec Port Security is part of the Cargotec company, which employs nearly 12,000 people and is a leading supplier of container handling equipment to the global port industry.
“We are extremely pleased to have achieved our first commercial order,” says Troy Thompson, President of Cargotec Port Security. “Lockheed Martin is an outstanding leader in the field of homeland, infrastructure and maritime security, and we are delighted to be working with them in this way. In a very short time terminals in the United States and around the world are going to need container security solutions that comply with the U.S. container security initiative, but which do so without compromising port productivity. At a time when the global economy is undergoing significant strains, we need security solutions that do not add ‘an extra security step’ in transhipment and intermodal operations, but which perform container scanning in the normal course of spreader operations. The system from Cargotec Port Security which we are supplying to Lockheed Martin has demonstrated proven performance at a very high scanning standard, without slowing terminal operations.”
