Cargotec Port Security has expanded its container radiation scanning product portfolio with the addition of new mobile product solutions. SafePort™ technology is now available for mounting on vessels patrolling waters at or around ports, and on trucks monitoring sensitive areas around the port and in surrounding cities. SafePort™ technology can scan vessels or vehicles approaching:

  • port property
  • petro-chemical plants, oil refineries, or gas storage facilities
  • military and law enforcement facilities
  • courthouses or other government building
  • tunnels or bridges

Cargotec Port Security SafePort™ technology is currently being used in a vessel-mounted application at a USA port, in addition to a crane application (on the spreader bar) at Port Charleston (USA). In addition to vessels and trucks, new SafePort™ solutions also include straddle-carrier and shuttle-carrier radiation detection equipment. Straddle Carrier and Shuttle Carrier solutions feature radiation and fissile material sensors mounted onto a self-propelled frame structure that can scan rows of containers stacked up to four high. SafePort™ yard scanning solutions provide for 100% verification of the containers in a stack at a port for hazardous radiological materials. Sensor modules, engineered to fit down the legs on each side of the straddle or shuttle carrier, are designed to scan as they straddle and move down stacks of containers.

Cargotec SafePort™ security solutions are particularly well-suited to address the significant "security gap" issues that exist at transshipment terminals. Transshipment hubs pose a particular risk since containers arriving by sea are normally transferred from one ship to another without going outside the terminal perimeter gates (where container scanning with portal monitors is typically performed.) The security risk is enhanced by the fact that millions of containers flow through transshipment terminals, many arriving via smaller feeder vessels.

Cargotec Port Security technology has been formally evaluated by various U.S. government agencies to verify system accuracy. Laboratory and field evaluations have resulted in:
  • An isotope identification accuracy level of 99.9%, with minimal false positives and false negatives
  • Effective analysis up to 4 million pulses per second, handling faster, random burst events without stacking pulses
  • An average gamma detection and neutron detection ability significantly greater than ANSI specified performance levels

Whatever the specific equipment application,SafePort™ solutions seek to meet the following objectives:
  • 100% container verification of radiological materials
  • Verification without impact to the normal velocity and flow of container commerce
  • Rapid completion of a comprehensive multi-level scanning process, including:
        • rapid and accurate isotope detection
        • product identification via comparison of a known isotope to a known NORMS database
        • pattern recognition analysis
        • isotope proportional mix analysis
        • final classification

All SafePort™ solutions are designed to achieve the following operational objectives:
  • Minimize the berthing time of each incoming vessel
  • Minimize container handling cost involved in transporting the container around and through the terminal for security scanning activities
  • Preserve port capacity by limiting the space that must be set aside for additional container scanning activities (and transport to/from scanning centers) within the terminal

"With the addition of SafePort™ shuttle carrier and straddle carrier radiation scanning applications, as well as our vessel and truck-mounted products, Cargotec Port Security now has an unmatched portfolio of solutions for customers," says Troy Thompson, President of Cargotec Port Security. "Safe ports are essential, as well as preserving the velocity of commerce. Mobile Cargotec Port Security solutions do not compromise port productivity, and do not add 'an extra security step' to transhipment and intermodal operations, but perform container scanning in the normal course of container handling operations."

Cargotec Port Security technology has been successfully evaluated by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the United States Department of Energy Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Cargotec Port Security has been awarded Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) Designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
