Hiab MEWP provides a safer way of working at heights

17/05/2010

CARGOTEC CORPORATION, TRADE PRESS RELEASE, 17 MAY 2010 AT 9.30 AM (EEST)

Cargotec's journey as a forerunner in efforts toward safer work environments continues. The Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) fitted on Hiab cranes comply with the EN 280 harmonised standard and the EU's Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC - to ensure safer and more productive working at heights.

One of the new features of the Hiab MEWP, more commonly called a personnel basket, is the Variable Stability Limit (VSL) system. This innovative feature, designed for loader and recycling cranes, is a more intelligent way to optimise crane capacity. The VSL system maximises capacity in relation to stability by registering how far stabiliser extensions are extended and ensuring that the legs are set firmly on the ground. In addition, Hiab MEWP cranes are fitted with the stabiliser lights and stabiliser equipment required, as well as an upgraded operator protection system (OPS). The OPS provides additional safety by defining a "virtual protection cage" and, electronically, prevents the boom from entering this restricted space. Now, it is possible to customise the cage by blocking out more space or changing its size.

A user-friendly and versatile solution

The Hiab MEWP solution focuses on simplicity and user-friendliness. After the basket is mounted, the crane is placed in MEWP mode by means of a simple key switch. The Hiab XS HiPro crane retains full capacity in MEWP mode, and crane speed is optimised for comfort, safety, and precision. To comply with safety standards, the maximum vertical speed is set to 0.4 m/s and the maximum slewing speed to 0.7 m/s. The two-man personnel basket, available in steel or aluminium, can be used both indoors and out. An external safety rail reduces the risk of crushing. The basket's floor is non-slippery and self-draining. The standard solution has automatic horizontal levelling of the basket and a battery charger, as well as a backup battery mounted inside the basket. In case of power loss, a manual emergency pump makes it possible to lower the personnel basket to the ground.

The MEWP can be used in various work situations way up high. This versatile and flexible solution from Hiab makes it possible to handle building materials, sand, soil, and gravel. Maintenance jobs, bridge inspections, and trimming of trees are some of the typical jobs for a Hiab MEWP.
