New features to Hiab cranes create a safer work environment

09/02/2010

CARGOTEC CORPORATION, TRADE PRESS RELEASE, 9 FEBRUARY 2010 AT 2 P.M. EET

Cargotec's entire range of Hiab cranes comply with the latest Machinery Directive, strengthening its role as an industry pioneer. Cargotec, the world's leading provider of load handling equipment, takes a major step towards creating safer working environments and increased user friendliness by complying with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

The Hiab brand is the global market leader in on-road load handling solutions. Today's message to Cargotec customers is crystal clear. "We care about our customers and our customers should always have access to the most advanced technological solutions available. By taking the Machinery Directive seriously, we are prepared to help customers comply. We also took a decision to fully comply with the new harmonised loader crane standard EN 12999:2009. This is perfect proof that Cargotec continues to strive towards safer working conditions. This is an investment for everyone's best interest," says Harri Ahola, Senior Vice President, Truck Cranes and Demountables, at Cargotec.

The solutions that Cargotec offers in compliance with the Machinery Directive and new crane standard have a direct effect on Hiab cranes. Numerous new features and technological solutions have been implemented on cranes as well as on demountables to make them more productive and avoid worksite accidents. In addition, all key personnel at Cargotec have gone through training regarding the Machinery Directive, its effects as well on documentation and installation requirements and new crane features.

Today, Hiab solutions make it possible for loader cranes to find lighter and leaner combinations of truck size and stabiliser equipment than ever before. For instance, a crane user can have a crane with increased capacity in some working areas simply by refraining slightly from capacity in others. The function that makes this possible is called Variable Stability Limit (VSL).This new feature, designed for loader and recycling cranes, helps the operator with supervision of stability and is a more intelligent way to optimise crane capacity. Essentially, VSL maximises capacity in relation to stability by registering how far stabiliser extensions are extended and ensuring that legs are set firmly on the ground.

The effect of the new Machinery Directive has been to introduce identical requirements for machinery safety in every country within the European Economic Area (EEA). The Directive's first and most important objective is to save lives by minimising worksite accidents. Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC came into force on 29 December 2009.
