Cargotec's technology and competence centre in Tampere reaches rooftop height - construction on schedule

Cargotec celebrates the topping-out ceremony of its technology and competence centre in Tampere, Finland today. The construction has proceeded on schedule. The modern facilities and the extensive test area are located close to Tampere University of Technology and will be operational in December.

"The new office building already resembles a straddle carrier, and the colours of the workshop building are similar to those of containers. Our focus is now shifting from walls and windows to the next stage: continuing the best Tampere-based tradition of innovations in a new environment. We aim to create the same kind of success in our company and in the society around us as earlier generations did at the aircraft factory where Cargotec's Tampere roots lie," says Matti Sommarberg, Cargotec's Chief Technology Officer.

The new site will host an extensive five hectare test area, in order to facilitate the testing and simulation of various solutions, including unmanned equipment and fleets, navigation systems and remote steering and control. Several technologies have already been installed in the area for this purpose: safety equipment to isolate the automation area, a wireless network to enable communication with machines, and ground references for machine navigation. The first test runs have been performed in the area.

The technology and competence centre in Tampere will develop innovative solutions for customers. It is part of Cargotec's global network of competence centres. In the centre, Cargotec focuses on developing energy-efficient, safe and intelligent solutions.
