Kalmar Trade Press Release

Cargotec's Kalmar straddle carriers power port expansion in New Zealand

22/12/2011

CARGOTEC CORPORATION, TRADE PRESS RELEASE, 22 DECEMBER 2011 AT 11 A.M. (EET)

Cargotec has secured an order to provide six Kalmar ESC 350W straddle carriers to Port of Tauranga in New Zealand. The straddle carriers will start operations in the Tauranga Container Terminal at the beginning of March 2012.

The new 7+ generation straddle carriers are capable of stacking 1-over-2 high with a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes with twin-lift spreaders. As part of the specification, the Kalmar ESC 350W models are equipped with Agco Sisupower diesel engines that are optimised for low fuel consumption and performance. The new straddle carriers can be converted to hybrid operation should the customer's future requirements demand it.

The order for Kalmar straddle carriers continues the customer's shift to twin-lifting equipment. It was placed to meet the need for additional capacity as the port's year on year growth has put a strain on existing resources. The decision to choose Cargotec was based on the customer's loyalty to the Kalmar brand following excellent performance from existing equipment and the excellent performance and fuel economy of the previously delivered two 7+ generation straddle carriers. Tauranga Container Terminal already operates 18 Kalmar straddle carriers which constitute the majority of its fleet.

Situated on the Bay of Plenty, Port of Tauranga is the natural gateway to and from international markets for many of New Zealand's businesses. The port's location is central to key export commodity sources and has direct links to major import markets. It has the capacity to expand its infrastructure, and unrivalled sea, road and rail connections.

The Tauranga Container Terminal is a business division of the Port of Tauranga, offering a 24-hour, seven-day service for ship planning, ship operations, marshalling, on-board stevedoring and reefer services. Investment in new technology is continuing as the Tauranga Container Terminal strives to further improve its performance, efficiency and service to customers.
