Kalmar Industries collaborates with
Penang Shipbuilding and Construction
tobuildsix RTGs in Malaysia

Kalmar Industries, the leading manufacturer of mobile container handling machinery, is to collaborate with Penang Shipbuilding and Construction Sdn Bhd (PSC) to manufacture six rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs). The machines will be built in Malaysia using components and systems manufactured by Penang Shipbuilding and Construction under the watchful eye of Kalmar Industries. The RTGs, which will stack containers 6+1 wide and 1 over 4 high, will be delivered to Penang Port, one of the leading ports in Malaysia, in August 2002.

The new PSC-Kalmar RTGs have been designed so that Smartrail could be easily retrofitted onto the machines at a later date should the port operators, Port Penang Sdn Bhd, request it. Kalmar’s Smartrail system is based on a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) which, once the RTG operator activates the automated steering, steers the crane along a pre-determined path. This enables the exact position of the RTG to be calculated to within ±10cm. By automating the steering, Smartrail technology enables the driver to travel at maximum speed between lifts and to concentrate fully on picking up or setting down containers. The net result is faster and safer operations.

By being linked to the yard management system, Smartrail also eliminates the need for drivers to type in location parameters manually for the containers being stacked. No matter whether the container is being stacked for the first time, having arrived by ship or by truck, or is being shuffled as the crane seeks a particular box, Smartrailverifies the container positions automatically. In real terms, Smartrail enables ports and terminals to keep their turnaround times, for both vessels and trucks, down to an absolute minimum.

Located on the north-west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Penang Port serves one of the busiest trade routes in the region, and handles approximately 770,000 TEU per annum. Penang Shipbuilding and Construction Sdn Bhd and Penang Port Sdn Bhd are separate entities.
