It is well-known that Kalmar and Patrick have been working on an automated straddle carrier port project since 1997.
PTS is currently focused on the implementation of the Kalmar-constructed automated straddle carrier and the integration of advanced container handling systems within the Patrick Terminals division. The aim of the new company is to become globally the leading automation company within the stevedoring industry by marketing the technology and expertise developed in this project.
According to Ilkka Annala, Vice President Straddle Carriers, Kalmars participation and investment in PTS cements the two companies relationship:
There needs to be a continuing close relationship to market the automated straddle carrier and other automation systems. We also need to provide effective support once the automation is installed. Together, we will have unrivalled expertise in these areas.
There is also scope for further co-operation in other automation developments. Kalmar is pushing ahead on several fronts and to have the opportunity of sharing ideas and experiences will be invaluable to both parties.
