DFDS Tor Line discovers the benefits
of outsourcing with Kalmar

DFDS Tor Line has expanded its rental and maintenance agreement with Kalmar Industries to cover the DFDS terminal in Maasvlakte, Holland and the North Sea Terminal in Norway. The rental agreement was originally signed two years ago, providing for full maintenance of its equipment at the Esbjerg terminal in Denmark. The positive results achieved to date have led to the expansion of the scope of the agreement. Today, the contract covers about 30 Kalmar machines, including terminal tractors, reachstackers and lift trucks.

The Kalmar agreement with DFDS Tor Line at the Maasvlakte terminal includes the rental and full maintenance of two ContChamp reachstackers and several forklift trucks, both Kalmar and other makes.

The agreement concept was first drawn up for the DFDS Scandic Terminal, Esbjerg, with the assistance of Kalmar Danish agent Arne Holst & Co. Under this agreement, DFDS Tor Line sold its existing equipment to Kalmar and then rented it back. Included in the deal is ongoing maintenance and service, which are taken care of by Arne Holst & Co in close co-operation with Kalmar. Over the course of the agreement, new equipment from Kalmar has also been incorporated into the deal.

According to the terms of the agreement, DFDS rents the equipment on a fixed monthly charge. This charge also covers the financing and insurance. Kalmar has agreed to ensure the machines' availability under a fixed charge per hour structure, which includes everything (eg, spare parts, servicing, manpower etc) except fuel and tyres.

DFDS Tor Line Chief Consultant, Per Soeholt, explains why Kalmar's rental and maintenance package is attractive:

"DFDS Tor Line is in the process of expanding and developing its operations. We are focused on offering our customers continuously improved services, which necessitates modern, up-to-date handling equipment so that we can keep the focus on our core businesses.

"Thanks to this co-operation with Kalmar we are able to value any new technical features based on a fixed rental and maintenance cost.

"Kalmar also has the technical knowledge and the global organization to ensure machine availability. Again, this is outside our focus at DFDS Tor Line, but is nonetheless essential in helping us to maintain our excellent operational standards."

DFDS Tor Line operates ro-ro liner traffic on daily routes across the North and Baltic seas. Its activities include sea transportation (gate-to-gate concept) and port terminal and agency operation. The company, which has an annual turnover of DKK 3 billion, transports approximately seven million tons of cargo, or approximately 6.5 million lane metres, per year.
