Cargotec receives its first Turkish order for Kalmar ship-to-shore cranes

07/06/2010

Cargotec has been awarded its first Turkish order for two Kalmar ship-to-shore (STS) cranes from Evyap Port. The highly customised cranes featuring performance enhancing specifications will enable faster ship turnaround times as the customer looks to expand its container terminal operations. The cranes will be delivered in the second quarter of 2011.Evyap Port's new 360 metre quay enhances its ability to offer better service to its container shipping clients. Previously operating with mobile harbour cranes, the company's new STS cranes will be capable of servicing post-Panamax vessels in twin-lift operation with 52-metre outreaches, 15-metre backreaches and 39-metre hoisting heights. The investment in Cargotec's reliable and eco-friendly crane technology supports Evyap Port's plan to increase its container volumes."Six years ago, we started operating our own seaside terminal as a means to ensuring a fast route-to-market for our group company's soap products," says Mehmet Serteser of Evyap Port. "Now, we are looking to expand our terminal operations as more and more containerised goods flow in and out of Turkey.

"Based on our previous experience working with Kalmar equipment, we are confident that Cargotec will again deliver on its promise of superior quality and reliable performance."The technical specifications of a Kalmar STS crane can be customised to meet unique operational requirements. Evyap Port has requested certain features which will make its cranes some of the industry's most environmentally friendly and productive STS cranes in operation. The units will feature optimised hoisting speeds that deliver accuracy and efficiency with very little energy consumption. The cranes will operate without hydraulics requiring less time for maintenance, lowering operating costs and eliminating the potential for oil leakages. Evyap Port is very familiar with Cargotec's equipment. In the last two years, the terminal operator has ordered a total of 10 Kalmar rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes equipped with Smartrail, an autosteering and container position verification technology system. Its latest 7+1 wide and 1-over-6 high E-One2 RTGs offer improved quality and safety features, the industry's lowest fuel consumption, and longer maintenance intervals with better performance. Evyap Port has also been operating with productive counterbalance machines from Cargotec. In addition to the contract for STS cranes, the customer has ordered more Kalmar equipment, including one DRF450-65S5 reachstacker, two DCF80-45E8 empty container handlers and one DCE80-6LB forklift.Evyap Port operates and manages Evyapport Kirazliyali, which plays an important role in the national economy due to its approximation to Istanbul and Kocaeli, the two major industrialized provinces of Turkey. Located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, the port handles general cargo, iron, steel and liquid shipments with its 830 m berth, 16 m draft, 240,000 sq m terminal area and 615,000 TEU capacity. The characteristics of the STS cranes ordered from Evyap Port are:

Safe working load on the ropes 82 tonnes (twin-lift operation)
Outreach 52 metres
Rail span 30 metres
Backreach 15 metres
Hoisting height above rail 39 metres
Hoisting height below rail 17 metres
Hoisting speed rate loaded / empty 60/120 metres / minute
Trolley travelling speed 210 metres / minute
Gantry travelling speed 45 metres / minute
