Doman Forest Products closes 32-truck deal with Attica

In what is believed to be the largest single purchase of heavy duty lift trucks in Canadian history, Doman Industries has taken delivery of 32 13.6 tonne (30,000 lb) capacity trucks from Attica Equipment, a Kalmar dealer located in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Stan Matson, service manager at Attica (center), conducts an orientation session for staff from Doman Richmond Lumber Division.

Doman Industries, Canada's second largest forest products company, accepted the offer in September, and all the Kalmar trucks have now been delivered. The machines, all of which are DCD-136-6 series trucks, will be employed at the company's milling facilities located in coastal British Columbia. Stephen Ward, controller and director of internal auditing at Doman'soffices in Duncan, BC, explains:

"We were considering bids from several other lift truck manufacturers. Attica's offer, while not the lowest, was clearly the best for us, and will help us lower our operating costs. Kalmar machines are more efficient and easier to service, plus the operator environment will make our drivers more productive."

According to Gary Levers, sales representative at Attica Equipment, the agreement involved much more than trucks. He explains:

"We approached this bid from the 'solutions' angle. We'll supply parts for the trucks and provide maintenance at locations where Doman has no technicians. Also, we'll provide training for their existing service technicians."

Additionally, Attica Equipment has acquired Doman's existing units, ranging in age from 1978 to late 1990 models, and will sell them to used equipment dealers throughout North America.

According to Mr Levers, Kalmar heavy lift trucks are making a big impact in the North American market:

"Kalmar's leadership in lift truck design and the quality of its products has opened a lot of eyes. Doman also found the people at Attica Equipment very helpful and willing to go the extra mile."

Dan House, Kalmar VP and director of sales for New Jersey operations, elaborates:

"This transaction demonstrates the flexibility and customer focus of the Kalmar dealer organisation. It's also solid evidence that our 'solutions' approach to meeting customer needs is producing results."

Attica has been a Kalmar dealer since 1980 and was instrumental in establishing the brand's presence in Western Canada. Attica has placed nearly 500 units with BC industrial and ports customers during that time.
