Press release,15June 2009
Cargotec launches Kalmar UniQ, a customized intelligent platform designed for improving overall performance and management of container handling equipment fleet in ports and terminals. UniQ further enhances the Kalmar range of cargo handling solutions and intelligent systems.
It can be adopted module-by-module starting from improving productivity of a single piece of equipment to managing complete terminal operations. Kalmar UniQ is designed for all types of container terminals and it can be added to the existing equipment fleet without needing to change overall logistics or layout.
With UniQ providing constant and real-time information of cargo movements the operator can plan and manage cargo flows more effectively and increase the profitability of their operation.
Martti Kähkölä, Vice President, Kalmar Intelligence & Automation at Cargotec said:
“UniQ uses the existing range of Kalmar intelligence and automation systems by combining Fleetview, Remote Machine Interface (RMI), Smartpath and Smartrail into one customized platform, which precisely meets the needs of each customer.
“UniQ provides visual information about container handling events and equipment and this helps to improve processes such as fleet usage and overall productivity. It can also gather data about machine performance and then convert it into knowledge about the machine specific maintenance needs. This considerably improves machine uptime as customers can schedule their maintenance needs well in advance.
The performance of a single RTG crane can be improved by driver assisting features. This enables the driver to concentrate on visual control instead of steering the RTG crane. As the RTG crane operator is able to use a higher travelling speed, the handling time per container can be reduced. UniQ also monitors the location of the RTG crane and container moves at all times, which makes it possible to avoid misplacing containers. This information can also be used for optimizing utilization of the equipment. Also other automatic features can be added to the new platform.
Mr. Kähkölä said:
“In order for the port operator to better evaluate the benefits of the UniQ solution for their own terminal, we can assist in analyzing the overall effect and cost impact. Kalmar Terminal Development is an advisory service that assists customers when planning new terminals and when improving the efficiency of the existing terminals. This service includes equipment recommendations, estimates the numbers of equipment needed, overall cost analysis, terminal layouts and operational simulations. This advisory service is based on the experience from working closely with more than 200 terminals globally.“
