MacGREGOR continues to contract complex multipurpose and heavy-lift ship projects in China

MacGREGOR Marseilles service team carries out more and more megayacht maintenance

This year has seen a significant change in the balance of business for Cargotec MacGREGOR service team in Marseilles: for the first time in 20 years it has carried out more megayacht repairs than RoRo-based work For the past two years, the MacGREGOR service team in Marseilles, France, has carried out megayacht repairs with increasing frequency and has now completed more than ever before. The French team worked on 10 megayachts during 2008.

Order number 10 was an extensive repair contract on board a 130m megayacht, said Philippe Duquennoy, MacGREGOR service manager for the project. This can still be considered as a new ship; it was built just a few years ago in Germany by LĀ¼rssen, which is a highly-regarded shipyard in the megayacht market.

MacGREGOR was awarded the repair contract by ITM, a Marseilles-based shipyard specialising in megayacht repair, and a company with which MacGREGOR has enjoyed a long-standing relationship over the last five years.

At the beginning of 2008, ITM asked MacGREGOR to inspect the vessel while it was berthed in Honolulu, and provide an estimate for the work. Mr Duquennoy said: Both the inspection and the estimating procedure were long processes so that we could provide the best cost estimate for the hydraulic and mechanical repairs that were needed.

In March ITM won the contract to carry out the work in Saint Nazaire starting at the beginning of May and finishing in mid-November 2008.

The list of the equipment overhauled by MacGREGOR included:
the transom door
the bottom plate access for a submarine, the tender cradle and the foldable bulkhead
15 side shell doors (some of which have a width of 11m)
lifting beams
tender cranes and helicopter cranes
a gantry crane for handling the submarine
steering gear
tender platforms
telescopic gangways with an outreach of 17m
mooring deck stairs
bunker station covers
foldable flagstaff
windlass & mooring winches
lifeboat davits & liferaft davits

During the project more than 250 hydraulic cylinders were overhauled, Mr Duquennoy said. Technically, it was challenging, but perfectly demonstrated MacGREGOR ability to meet the exacting needs of the megayacht market.
